Dirty Laundry is a play about the things we wish we could hide; explored through text, song, movement, and laundry. Inspired by the laundress scene from Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca’s play, Yerma, the piece  explores themes of gossip, community, women’s work, cycles, and the dichotomies of sin and purity, dirty and clean, joining poetic language with rhythmic physicality and domestic work songs. In this short piece, the laundresses, only peripheral characters in Yerma, will take center stage and begin to talk – through Lorca’s words, through new text, through movement, and through song.  From what Lorca called “a tragic poem in three acts” springs a night filled with dirty secrets, coming clean, and some things that are wrecked beyond repair.

Created with Hannah Gaff, Emlyn Guiney, Maria Leigh, Diann Leo, Marilet Martinez, Erin Maxon, Caroline Parsons, and Liz Wand.
